Who was Mannix?

He was a great part of Australian history....

Daniel Mannix was both a Catholic priest and a profoundly brilliant scholar. He began as a student of Maynooth College in the County of Kildare in Ireland, moving on to become a teacher, a professor and finally the college’s President.

He travelled to Australia in 1913 to work as the Coadjutor (Assistant) to Archbishop Carr of St Patrick’s Cathedral and became the Archbishop of St Patrick’s in 1917 when Archbishop Carr passed away.

He was a person of strong loyalties and convictions, who was prepared to go to battle for them. He spoke out on many issues – conscription, war, authority, Irish independence, republicanism, Australian identity and above all, religious beliefs. He was a man of honour and high principles, an inspiring and dedicated leader.

"He was a most remarkable man, with great intellectual powers, marked courage and a power of persuasive speech I have never known surpassed." – Former Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Robert Menzies.
